marcel wisznia
New orleans, LA
Our Jury Chair and guest speaker Marcel Wisznia visits us from New Orleans, LA. The architect/developer leads a design driven development organization, Wisznia | Architecture + Devel-opment and fosters an environment that encourages creative cross-disciplinary solutions. His experienced and talented team of Architecture, Development, and Property Management professionals participate in and are informed by every aspect of a building’s life cycle. They are very proud of their award winning portfolio, but know that the best work is still ahead.
Wisznia | Architecture+Development was founded by his father, Walter Wisznia, in 1947 in Corpus Christi. At the beginning of the 1960’s, Walter pioneered a new building type in Texas, residential condominiums. The concept was so new for the area that legislation had to be written to allow for this building type. Although it was unusual at the time, Walter Wisznia not only acted as Architect, but also as Real Estate Developer.
Marcel Wisznia, following in his father’s footsteps as an Architect/Developer, has a long history of building the partnerships needed to bring catalytic projects to market. He was awarded the Tony Goldman Award by The National Trust for Historic Preservation for his leadership in modifying federal regulations to enable HUD guaranteed loans to be utilized in conjunction with other federal and state incentive programs. The pairing of these key programs with others contributed to the development of Union Lofts, The Maritime , The Saratoga and The Garage mixed-use developments in the New Orleans CBD. The success of these developments led Marcel to bring the model to other markets, including the award winning Pizitz Redevelopment in Birmingham, Alabama and the 600 Building in Corpus Christi, Texas.
His commitment to design excellence has remained consistent throughout 50 years of practice; from his first commission, an award winning residence, to the completed Pizitz, which was honored with ENR Southeast’s Best Restoration Award in 2017 and The Garage, an AIA New Orleans award winner.
This year’s design award winners will be announced and recognized at the Annual AIA El Paso Architecture Gala (Powered by PechaKucha) on January 26th in Downtown El Paso at the Hotel Paso del Norte. Award recipients will present their projects in the PechaKucha 20x20 format at the live event.
